چکیده
Abstract Are people more likely to (mis)interpret information so that it aligns with their ideological identity when relying on feelings compared engaging in analytical thinking? Or is the other way around: Does deliberation increase propensity confirm existing political views? In a behavioral experiment, participants ( n = 1207, Swedish sample) assessed numerical concerning effects of gender quotas and immigration either under time pressure or no pressure. To measure trait differences cognitive sophistication, we also collected data numeric ability. We found clear evidence motivated reasoning assessing both companies’ financial results effect refugee intake crime rates. Subjects who prioritized equality over liberty labor market were 13 percentage points less correctly assess depicting companies used hiring made profit. classified themselves as ‘Swedes’ rather than ‘World citizens’ 14 rates decreased following immigration. Time did not affect likelihood engage reasoning, while subjects higher ability analyzing intake, but regarding quotas. Together these indicate primarily driven by individual thinking at level situational factors such pressure, whether analysis depends topic hand.

Motivated Moral Reasoning
Moral judgments are important, intuitive, and complex. These factors make moral judgment particularly fertile ground for motivated reasoning. This chapter reviews research (both our own and that of others) examining two general pathways by which motivational forces can alter the moral implications of an act: by affecting perceptions of an actor’s moral accountability for the act, and by influen...
متن کاملMotivating Discounts: Price-Motivated Reasoning
The behavioral implications of relatively low prices and of discounts have been viewed from two opposing perspectives. From an attribution perspective, a large discount signals low quality and decreases the overall appeal of the product, but from a motivational account, a large discount seems attractive and increases the overall appeal of the product. We demonstrate the existence of both accoun...
متن کاملThe case for motivated reasoning.
It is proposed that motivation may affect reasoning through reliance on a biased set of cognitive processes--that is, strategies for accessing, constructing, and evaluating beliefs. The motivation to be accurate enhances use of those beliefs and strategies that are considered most appropriate, whereas the motivation to arrive at particular conclusions enhances use of those that are considered m...
متن کاملIdeology, motivated reasoning, and cognitive reflection
Decision scientists have identified various plausible sources of ideological polarization over climate change, gun violence, national security, and like issues that turn on empirical evidence. This paper describes a study of three of them: the predominance of heuristic-driven information processing by members of the public; ideologically motivated reasoning; and the cognitive-style correlates o...
متن کاملReflection-in-action and motivated reasoning
Reflection in design pedagogy still has a limited theoretical basis, being based largely on historical precedent and the more recent work of Donald Schön. Discipline criticisms of reflection in design pedagogies and curricula have yet to be addressed fully and, compared to other disciplines, design has relatively little critical debate around the theory and practice of reflection. Research in o...
